I'm getting married tomorrow.
No matter how many times she thinks it, Thayet can't quite believe this is really happening. A large court wedding, something she had tried to avoid, has now become something with the power to make her smile as if somebody had just handed her her fondest wish.
That doesn't mean she's not nervous.
Escaping Buri had been rather difficult, but Thayet needs some time to think. The fact that she chooses the garden for her late-night wandering when Jon has been known to do the same is purely coincidental.
Right.

He catches a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye and grins in recognition.
"Couldn't sleep either, my love?"

In a high, squeaky voice, "Isn't it bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding?"
He grins and ducks to avoid getting thwapped.

"I suspect the fates will forgive us this travesty. Especially if they have any idea what the palace has been like recently."
no subject
"Mithros, I'm sick of people. Remind me again whose idea it was to have an enormus state wedding?"

Walking around the hedge, she slowly looks up at him, hands twisting in her skirt.
"What if the people don't care for me, Jon?"
no subject
"Impossible. Absolutely impossible." He pulls her in and wraps his arms around her, holding her close.
"Besides, I'm the king. If anyone says anything, I'll have them arrested." He pulls back and grins evily.

The last is added quietly as she sighs and brushes his hair back.
"It will be nice to put some of our plans in action."
no subject
He smiles down at her. "It will indeed. We are going to drag this country into the future, kicking and screaming if necessary."
He leans down and presses his forehead to hers. "I have to say, though, I'm having trouble concentrating on anything but tomorrow night." His voice is a low rumble.

"It has been rather difficult," she whispers. "At least you know what to expect?"
Forgetting to breathe, she watches his mouth, appreciating the shape of it.
no subject
"Not in the least." He leans down and kisses her lightly on the forehead. "No one else has ever made me feel this way." There may be a slight tremble to his hands.

Lifting on her toes, she gives him a soft kiss.
"I'm excited. A tad bit scared, but mostly excited."
no subject
He captures her lips again, kissing her a bit more deeply, before pulling back and giving a soft sigh.
"You never need to fear me. It will be wonderful, and I'm planning on taking things very slowly." His voice drops to a slow drawl.

Indeed, she is looking forward to it quite a bit. It's the possibility she might disappoint him that worries her.
One perfectly shaped eyebrow arches. "How slow?"
no subject
"Very slow."
He pulls back slowly, his lips just touching her skin as he moves. He meets her gaze and smiles slowly, sensuously.
no subject
"You, sir, won't last until the final toast."
After brushing a quick kiss to the side of his neck, she moves deeper into the shadows, smiling to herself.
no subject
"You can't escape that easily."
no subject
It's not quite like any kiss she has ever given him. Long and intense, it's full of the knowledge that tomorrow she'll be his, he'll be hers and that will be the start of even better things.
Resting her forehead against his, she smiles.
"I should go in," she says quietly. "But I shall see you soon."
no subject
"You will. And for always after."
no subject
Smiling happily, she squeezes his hand one last time and returns to the path.
Not much longer now.
